Against a backdrop of continuous price hikes, Disney has just announced some significant changes that would appear to be more in favor of their own bottom line. Perhaps the most significant change they have implemented is to bypass Apple’s in-app purchasing system for both Disney+ and Hulu. This way, Disney certainly does not have to share up the 30% fee that goes along with Apple for every transaction done through an App Store which is a good point but it also has now forced their customers to either pay via Werfall direct and or only buy these streaming services through on-site Disney resources.
Now users will have to handle all of their subscriptions separately, instead of wishing they could consolidate them into a single spot like the App Store. It can be a bit inconvenient as having your personal information on more platforms only adds to the list of potential security problems. But now, Disney keeps a higher percentage of that transaction than it did when Apple took its cut.
Disney+ and Hulu End App Store
Additionally, Disney+ and Hulu are also moving off of Apple’s Video Partner Program, which offers reduced App Store fees at 15% for eligible services that partake in selling ads through Siri and Universal Search.
So, long story short if you are already subscribed via Apple — nothing changes. However, if you are new (or returning) to Disney Plus or Hulu then note that future subscriptions will need to be made directly with Disney. Using Apple devices you can still stream.
